Wilbur Cooper was a left-handed pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1912 through 1924. He also pitched for the Chicago Cubs, in 1925, and for a brief time in 1926, the Detroit Tigers.

Wilbur was my grandfather Grimm's second cousin, making him my second cousin twice removed. Interestingly, as he finished his major-league career with the Detroit Tigers in 1926, he played with another relative of mine, Charlie Gehringer. Gehringer was my great-great-uncle on my mom’s side of the family, and was just beginning his Hall of Fame career as a second baseman.
