iBook G3/500 Dual USB (Snow), late 2001 (M8597LL/C)

Introduced in October 2001 and discontinued in May 2002. The 500 MHz version had 640 MB of RAM, a 15 GB hard drive and a CD-ROM drive, at a cost of $1299. More expensive versions were available with different optical drives, larger hard drives, and a 600 MHz processor.

Michigan had a program in 2000 called the Teacher Technology Initiative, which aimed to give schools the funds to buy a computer for every teacher in participating schools. After three years, the computer was supposed to be returned to the district. The state also made the program available for teachers to privately purchase a computer at the same cost, which is what I did. The laptop cost $1200 and came with an external USB drive and a carrying case. It came with install discs for OS 9.2.1 and OS X 10.1.

This laptop still works, but the display in 2010. It can be hooked up to a different computer in Firewire mode, so the files can still be accessed. We didn’t feel it was cost effective to fix a nine-year-old computer, so we replaced it with a Macbook.
