Census records indicate that John was born around 1788, but death records would put his birth around August/September 1786.

On February 4, 1830, John deeded land in Monongalia Co., VA by William T. Bright and Keziah, his wife.60 On December 4, 1834, John Darnell and his wife Elizabeth deeded to John Zearley a part of the Bright Tract and part to Jobe Simms and Aaron A. Bright.60 Census records indicate that he farmed, but he also conducted a hotel and bar in Morgantown, WV.60

John’s will was written and probated in Monongalia Co., VA in September 1861.60

John’s will (see below) is an important genealogical source. First of all, it confirms his identity because it names his children. Secondly, he identifies his wife in the will, Isabella. Finding that led to looking for this second marriage. On Aug. 23, 1860, John married Isabella Kincaid in Monongalia Co., WV. He was 70 and widowed. She was 54 and single. The marriage record gives his place of birth as Prince William Co., VA, and names his parents Samuel and Chloe. Isabella was born in Ireland but her parents were not named.

Will (Monongalia Co., WV Will Book, v. 002, 1856-1872, p. 67:

I John Darnell of Monongalia County being weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory, do hereby make this my last will and testament. First, to Sarah Mary Roderick I give Five dollars. And to Samuel Darnell I give & bequeath five dollars, and to the children of Henry Darnell, dec’d I give the sum of one dollar each. And being possessed of about one hundred acres of land in Monongalia County, I devise the same as follows: To my son-in-law Jacob Smell I give the upper or South end of my farm, beginning at a corner of land formerly conveyed to said Smell by me, standing near the Evansville Pike, then with said Road in the direction of Morgantown, until it comes to a field on the Right hand side of said Pike as you go to Evansville, which field adjoins William Howell, and running over the Pike so as to include said small piece of cleared Land, then running along a road until it comes to & includes a meadow this year cut by said Smell and then in an Eastern direction with a fence to Tansy’s (Arthur) line, and then running so as to give the upper End of my farm to said Smell. I devise the lower end of said tract of Land to my son James Darnell which adjoins Tansey, Cornwell & the Big survey so called. And in consideration of this desire the said James Darnell will pay my son Aaron Darnell two hundred dollars and in consideration the devise to Jacob Smell he is hereby required to pay One hundred dollars to John Rogers my son in law, And to the children of John Jenkins by my daughter now dec’d I give one dollar each. And to my wife Isabella I give One hundred & thirty Dollars that George M. Rear(?) owes me. Also all the personal property that my said wife owned when I married her, and also one feather bed & bedding, the choice of the cows on the farm in addition. And my said wife shall also be furnished yearly by the said Jacob Smell & my son James with one third of the grain & products of the farm, which I have given them. And she is to enjoy and occupy the North End of my dwelling House & one third of the garden. And forty five acres of mountain land owned by me, I desire shall be equally divided between my children, who may be living at the time said division is made. I also bequeath to my son James a cow & bed. And the residue of my personal property shall be sold for the payment of my debts, and if any surplus it is to be equally divided between my children. And my son James & Jacob Smell are to furnish my wife with a horse whenever she may desire to Ride and win addition, I give my said wife one set of spoons large & small each & 1 set of knives and forks. And lastly I point my son James & Jacob Smell my Executors.
