James was living in Pittsburgh in 1897 when he was identified as a son of John Acklin in John’s obituary.
136He was found in the 1891 city directory of Pittsburgh with his son Harry. They were both working as gatherers and lived at 2301 Sidney Street.
In the 1900 Census there are two listings for James; one in Jefferson Twp., Allegheny Co., PA, and one in Ward 23, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co. The first listing shows him and son Harry O. as boarders in the house of Adam and Joana Rector.

In the 1920 census of Ward 15, Pittsburgh, there is a James S. Acklin, lodger, age 72 living with William and Mary Creely. Not certain if this might be the same James Acklin, although everything matches except middle initial.
In 1880 James is listed as a member of the General George D. Bayard Post, #178, Grand Army of the Republic. He served in Company E, 14th PA Cavalry from Feb. 27, 1864 through May 1865 during the Civil War. He received a pension on Dec. 19, 1879.
