Reported by Jas. W. Chirney, neighbor
“Bert became a school teacher, first in Pleasants County and then in Tyler County. In 1914 and 1915 he attended West Liberty College and then taught school at Shiloh until 1918, when he moved his family to Friendly and became employed by Carter Oil Company in its Sistersville field. Except for the school year 1921-22, when he taught school in Friendly, he was engaged in oil field work. In May, 19292, Bert was employed by Standard Oil Company and assigned to the first of his five trips to South America to work in its Argentine and Bolivian oil fields. He retired from Standard Oil in 1940, and returned to Friendly where he became active in civic affairs and served as town mayor.”
