According to Connie Grimm Bensyl, Harvey left the family farm as a young man to become an evangelistic preacher. Later in life, he became a Christian preacher and had a church at Viola, Marshall Co., WV.739

Harvey served in Co. I, 1st WV Cavalry during the Civil War.10
