Misc. Notes
Obituary, Observer-Reporter (Washington, PA), Nov. 19, 2016 (online edition):
Lucile Headley Jenkins departed this earth to heaven Thursday, November 17, 2016, surrounded by family and friends.
She was born June 23, 1923, in Waynesburg, a daughter of Grover Cleveland and Velma Magdalene Chess Headley.
Mrs. Jenkins spent her young years attending schools in Richhill Township, Greene County. She graduated magna cum laude in her high school class in Jacktown. She then went to Waynesburg College, majoring in English and mathematics, and graduated cum laude in 1944.
While in college, she met and married Kennedy Areford Jenkins. When her husband was in World War II, she and her daughter, Martha, lived with her parents.
Mrs. Jenkins taught high school English classes for a short time, and later became post mistress of Old Concorde Post Office in her father's general store.
After World War II, jobs and housing were difficult to obtain, causing the young family to delay going to housekeeping, now with their second daughter, Joyce. In 1949, all necessities were met and they continued their 50-year marriage in Perryopolis. Later, they moved to a farm in Amwell Township, near Lone Pine. She and her husband lived there for 40 years, until Kennedy's death.
Mrs. Jenkins was a stay-at-home mother. She was also a wonderful help-mate for the work that was required while living on a farm. She was a voracious reader and was always a friend of the library where she lived.
She volunteered in several organizations, including being an officer in Lone Pine Parent Teacher Association, a Girl Scouts leader and sponsor, a 65-year member, officer and committee chairperson of both Eureka Grange and Chestnut Ridge Grange and serving on state Grange committees and as a chairperson. She would often develop county fair booths for the Grange.
Mrs. Jenkins worked in Lone Pine Christian Church and served as a Sunday school teacher, board officer and member of the choir, as well as coordinating dinners and festivals.
She was a member of Senior Citizen Club and sang in their musical productions. She was also a member of Washington Community Chorus for a couple years.
Surviving are two daughters, Martha Ann (Joseph) Gorecki and Joyce Lynne (Martin) Hrutkay; a few Headley and Chess cousins; a sister-in-law, Nancy Jenkins; two stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Her children believe their mother will be dearly missed by all who knew her because of her personality and lady-like qualities.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, in Lone Pine Christian Church, 582 Lone Pine Road, Washington, PA 15301, with Pastor John Owen officiating. Interment will follow in Lone Pine Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Lone Pine Christian Church, Washington, or Waynesburg University.
Arrangements are entrusted to Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Directors Inc., Charles R. Piatt, owner/supervisor, Lawrence K. Donovan, director.
