From his obituary:
J. W. Grimm, 88, of Middlebourne, youngest man ever elected to an office in Tyler County, died on Sunday in Camden Clark Hospital in Parkersburg following a short illness. Grimm, who served a term as Tyler County assessor and later served as sheriff also was the builder of the old Borland Springs hotel beyond Murphytown. He was elected assessor in 1888 at the age of 22, thus gaining the distinction of the county’s youngest office holder.
He was born in Lenardsville, PA September 22, 1866, a son of the late H. G. and Malissa Lough Grimm. His family moved to Tyler County when he was one year old. Grimm was a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner and a member of Knights Templar. He was the holder of a 50 year Masonic Pin.
Grimm taught six years in Tyler County schools. He had attended Fairmont Normal, now Fairmont State College. In 1889 he operated a store and secured a post office at Wilbur, WV, a community named after him, his middle name being Wilbur.
Grimm, a trustee and member of the building committee of the Middlebourne EUB Church, helped build two EUB Churches. He was also active in church work at Borland Springs. In 1905 he promoted the Peters Creek Cal Company, becoming secretary of the firm. He also promoted the Indian Creek Oil and Gas Company.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Harriett Spies Grim at home; one son, Frank Chandis Grimm, retired lieutenant of Parkersburg Fire Department and one daughter, Mrs. W. H. Bills of Akron, Ohio. One son, Morris and one sister, Mallissa preceded him in death.
The body was removed to Sawyers Funeral Home in Middlebourne. Services were held Thursday at 2 pm in the EUB Church with Dr. Frederick Slaughter in charge. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery, Sistersville, where Masonic grave side rites were held.”
