“In 1852 or 1853, John and his wife and three small children moved from Monongalia County to Tyler where he purchased 276 acres on Purgatory Run, from Joseph M. Corbly. ... John and Mary raised eleven children, six of whom lived within a ten mile radius of each other in Tyler County. ... During the Civil War, John William supported the Southern cause. When the Union Army recruiter came through Tyler County he hid Jacob, then sixteen, in a haystack to prevent his being conscripted. ... Three of John’s and Mary’s children died in 1874 of diptheria, William died in 1881 of typhoid fever at the age of 32, and Margaret died of measles in 1884. ... On May 29, 1899, John William died at his home on Purgatory Run and was buried at Fairview Cemetery. His wife continued to live at the family homestead with her youngest son Caleb until her death June 6, 1913. She was a member of Methodist Protestant Church for forty-eight years and was buried beside her husband in the church cemetery at Fairview.”
