Obituary (from Lanny Grim): (note: last name was spelled differently throughout obit)
“Retired Blacksmith Dies Here At Age Of 96 Years
John Thomas “Daddy” Grimm, who retired from his trade of blacksmithng at the age of 81, after 45 years in that occupation, died at 2 p. m. Thursday, March 28, 1946, in the Carolyn Nursing Home, East Beau street, at the age of 96 years and four months.
Mr. Grimm made his home with a son, Harley M. Grim, East Maiden street, Washington, until two years ago, when he was injured in a fall. He fully recovered from that injury. He took great pride in the fact that, except for the effects of that falal, he was never really ill in his entire life.
Mr. Grim, who was the last survivor of the 10 children of Armstrong Grim and Mary Ann Scott Grim, was born Nov. 7, 1849, near Wind Ridge, Greene County. He married Sarah Jane Carroll, of near Wind Ridge, who died in June, 1916. He was of a pioneer Greene County family, his grandfather having settled in that county in 1783.
For more than 45 years Mr. Grimm was engaged as a blacksmith, working and operating shops at several points in Greene and Washington counties, including 27 years at West Alexander. During World War I, at the age of 66, he began working as a blacksmith for the West Penn Power Company, and remained in the company’s employ from 1918 until December 1930, when he retired at the age of 81.
Since his retirement he lived in Washington, spending most of his time in the home of his son, Harley M. Grimm.
Surviving are four children, Thomas A. Grimm, Wellington, Kansas; Jessie, wife of M. T. Vernon, Alliance, Ohio; Nellie, wife of J. C. Saenz, Canton, Ohio, and Harley M. Grimm, Washington; also eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Three children are deceased, Arthur and Elizabeth, who died while small, and Clara, wife of the late George Sinclair, of Canton, Ohio.”
