Floyd was the son of Winfred and Mamie Grim Blake. He joined the army August 4, 1942 and was assigned to the Quartermaster's Corps at Camp Adair, Oregon. He was further trained at Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Riley, Kansas. His last service in the states was at Fort Breckenridge, Kentucky, from where he was sent overseas in October 1943 (source: Pomeroy Sentinel, Pomeroy, Ohio June 29, 1944).
He was killed in action April 28, 1944 during "Operation Tiger" on the LST 507, which took place off the English coast of Devon, near Slapton Sands. Nine hundred forty six seamen and soldiers lost their lives when their LSTs were torpedoed and sunk by marauding German "E" boats. Files on "Operation Tiger" were sealed until 1984. Books and television documentaries have since been made about the U.S. tragedy of "Operation Tiger" which was the disastrous practice for the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
While those who died during the invasion on D-Day have been (rightfully so) lauded and memorialized for their sacrifice, the brave soldiers who lost their lives off the shores of England in the rehearsal for the historical D-Day also bravely gave their all to the defense of our country.
