“Clarice Giler, active volunteer,
former librarian and researcher
Clarice Giler of Norwalk, a former librarian, teacher and researcher who was active volunteer in Wilton civic, school and church groups for many years and known for her friendly, cheerful and kind bearing, died on Sunday, July 4.
Her death was suddenly of a stroke, her family said. Known to her friends as Claire, she was born Dec. 1, 1933 in Rogersville, Pa., where she grew up among 53 first cousins within walking distance of her home. She was the daughter of the late David R. Phillips and Roxie Connor. Her primary education started in a one-room school house with her uncle as the teacher. Later, because of low finances, her parents moved to Clarion, Pa., so that she would be able to stay at home while attending Clarion State Teachers College. She graduated in 1953 with a B.S. degree in library science, and a minor in English.
While working in Meadville, Pa., at the Allegheny College Library, one evening she met her future husband, Roger R. Giler, who was employed by Westinghouse as an engineer. It was love at first sight even before she had to remind him to be more quiet in a library, Mr. Giler recalled.
She then worked briefly as a school librarian in the Pittsburgh area, and in 1954, she and Roger eloped to Ripley, N.Y., nine days after he was granted his U.S. citizenship. Her concern was to avoid the expense of a fancy wedding party, and instead save money to start a family.
She became a homemaker and had two sons, Eric and Mark while living in Cochranton, Pa. She followed her husband in obtaining her FCC amateur radio license (W1AGQ).
In 1958, they were transferred to the Buffalo, N.Y., area and lived in East Aurora, N.Y., where her third son, Paul, was born. In 1962, the family moved to Cannonsburg, Pa., for one year before being transferred to Connecticut. From 1963 to 2000, she lived in Wilton from where all her sons graduated from the high school.
In Wilton, she was active in PTA activities, becoming PTA president and started substitute teaching. She worked as a researcher at HomeEquity and later in the town clerk's office.
She was an active member of the Wilton Congregational Church. Over the years she volunteered in many activities including the Wilton Library, the Women's Republican Club and the Norwalk Senior Center while maintaining a bulletin board for her church and proofreading/editing several local publications. Most recently she was elected assistant treasurer of the Norwalk-Wilton Chapter of the AARP.
Her hobbies included genealogy, reading and amateur radio. Although initially intimidated by computers (weren't we all?, quipped Mr. Giler, who for many years has been writing the Computer Corner column for The Bulletin) she found she could use them to effectively locate, research and communicate with other branches of her family.
Besides her husband of 49 years and three sons, Eric, who lives with his wife Kim in Wellesley, Mass.; Mark and his wife Cindy, of Pasadena, Md.; and Paul, who lives with his wife Linda in Charlotte, N.C., she is survived by seven grandchildren, Ben, Sam and Lily of Wellesley and Chase, Sophia, Hayden and Blake of Charlotte.
Although Roger and Claire Giler moved to Norwalk, right next to the Wilton town line, approximately three years ago, her heart remained in the town where she had lived for 37 years. Her cheerful countenance was seen in Wilton on a daily basis. Most people will remember her as that friendly and smiling woman who made others feel comfortable and extended a hand of friendship to all she met.
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her, family members and friends said.
A memorial service will be held at the Wilton Congregational Church, 70 Ridgefield Road (Route 33) on Thursday, July 15, at 10 a.m. The family is requesting that no flowers be sent, but suggests instead that donations in her name may be made to the Wilton Library
Association, 137 Old Ridgefield Road, Wilton, CT 06897, or a charity of your choice in her memory.”
