“Herman David Fonner
W.Va. man was WWII vet, owned welding service
Herman David Fonner, 73, of Dallas, W.Va., died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, in Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, W.Va.
He was born June 25, 1931, in Fayette County, a son of Thomas and Estella Brooks Fonner.
Mr. Fonner retired in 1985 from Hanna Coal Co., now known as Consolidated Coal Co., where he was a welder. He also owned Fonner Welding Service.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952 and he was a veteran of the Korean War. He was stationed in Hanau, Germany.
He was a member of American Legion Post 656 of West Alexander. He also was a member of Liberty Lodge 26 Ancient, Free and Accepted Mawns of West Liberty and was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
He served as fire chief at Dallas Volunteer Fire Department for 17 years.
Mr. Fonner was a member of Dallas United Methodist Church. He organized the Dallas Trail Riders, of which he was wagon master for 20 years. He was a lifetime member of Viola Sportsman Club, Viola, W.Va.
Surviving are a daughter, Brenda S. Fonner of Dallas; a son, Thomas D. Fonner of Dallas; a brother Marvin L. Fonner of Dallas; a granddaughter, Angela L. Fonner Ward of Claysville; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are his wife, Harriet Collins Fonner, who died in 2001; and four brothers, Thomas, Norman, Martin and Fred Fonner.”9
