Alfred was a center fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. His father-in-law, Wilbur Cooper, was his manager. Alfred was drafted into WWII out of spring training, sometime around 1941. He was shot in both legs and lost his baseball career upon returning from WWII. He did spend 10 years as a professional scout. He and Janice settled in Van Nuys, CA.1814
