Youth Drowns In Meigs Creek As Thin Ice Breaks
Meets Identical Fate of Father Who Drowned in Same Creek Just Six Years Ago

Glenn Cooper, 17, residing six miles north of Beverly, was drowned Saturday afternoon about 1:30 o’clock in Meigs creek while engaged in operating muskrat traps near his home.

His father, Alva Cooper, met death in a similar manner six years ago to the day within a few hundred feet of the scene of yesterday’s fatality.

Cooper was alone yesterday at the time. A neighbor, Lawrence Eubank, who was working on his own farm, heard Cooper call frantically for help about 1:30 o’clock. Eubank was unable to ascertain immediately from where the calls came, but later investigation revealed a hole in the ice of Meigs creek about 15 feet from the shore.

Eubanks summoned the fire department from both Beverly and Malta-McConnelsville, and the body was later discovered in the creek by Chief Fred Hart of the Beverly fire department and Frank Allbery, his assistant. The ice on the creek was scarcely one inch thick at the scene of the drowning.

Cooper is survived by his mother, Mrs. Edna Graham Cooper of the home six miles north of Beverly, and by one brother, Graham Cooper of Stockport. The body was removed to the Mindling funeral home in Beverly. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

The youth was a nephew of Wilbur (Lefty) Cooper former National League pitcher.

Services Today for Drowned Lad

Beverly—Last rites were held this afternoon at 2 o’clock at Mindling funeral home here for Glenn Cooper, 18, who drowned Saturday afternoon when he slipped and fell into Meigs creek, five miles north of here. Burial was made in the local cemetery.

The youth was examining a trap line when he plunged into the tributary of the Muskingum river just six years after his father, Alva Cooper had drowned while attempting to cross this stream. Both tragedies occurred in approximately the same locale.

McConnelsville and local firemen were called to search for the body of the boy but were handicapped by the presence of ice in the creek. The body was located about two hours later by Firemen Allberry and Hart of this town and Cecil Deist, a neighboring boy.

Cooper’s cries for help were heard by Lawrence Eubanks, a employe of the Delbert Doaks farm, but he was unable to locate the lad when he arrived on the scene.

The boy is survived by his mother; one brother, Graham Cooper of near Swift; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. J. C. Cooper of Fremont.

Glenn Cooper Drowned in Meigs Creek, Saturday

Wilbur Glenn Cooper lost his life early on Saturday afternoon, January 15, 1938, in the waters of Meigs Creek near the Delbert Doak home, exactly six years after the drowning in the Muskingum river of his father, Alva Newton Cooper. Glenn was setting traps for minks and was about 20 feet from the creek shore nearest Beverly when the ice broke. His cries as he went under were heard at the Delbert Doak home and aid was summoned. A passing traveler reported the news at McConnelsville and the McConnelsville fire company also went to the scene arriving after the local firemen. It was about an hour before the body was found about 20 feet from the opposite shore and brought in with grappling hooks by Fire Chief Hart and helpers. It is assumed that in the confusion of the perilous moment Glenn started to swim to the farther shore rather than the nearest. First aid measures were unavailing.

Wilbur Glenn Cooper, the son of Edna Graham Cooper and the late Alva Newton Cooper, was born at Beckett, Waterford township on April 5, 1920. In November of 1923 the family moved to a farm in Windsor township, Morgan county. He was a student in the Windsor township public school and the high school at Stockport. He spent much time in out-of-door pursuits, loved nature in its various forms and grew into vigorous, active young manhood. The death of his father brought to him more than the ordinary responsibilities of youth on the farm, which he discharged efficiently.

Surviving are his mother, a brother, Graham Cooper; grandmother Mrs. J. C. Cooper, aunts, uncles, other relatives and many friends.

The obsequies were held at the Mindling Funeral Home in Beverly on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. Orlando Brown, pastor of Waterford M. E. church officiating. Those serving as pallbearers were Oscar Graham, Graham Cooper, Blaine Cooper, Ray Cooper, Cecil Deist, Lawrence Eubank, Harold McFerren and Joe Sherman. The interment was in Beverly cemetery, C. H. Mindling, funeral director. The funeral services were largely attended.
