Shirley Eileen Locke Cox, 85, of Indianapolis, was born May 11, 1930 to James and Ital Locke in East Liverpool, OH.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Jim Cox.
She leaves behind her great nephew and niece, Jason and Patty Locke of Indianapolis and their daughters, Taryn and Remy; nephews, Todd (Mary Rita) and Brand (JoAnna) Washburn of Cincinnati, OH; and niece, Amy (Steve) Moenning of Punta Gorda, FL, and their families; nephew, Keith (Linda) Locke of Belmont, NC; and numerous nephews and nieces and their families.
Shirley was raised on the Locke family farm near East Liverpool, the youngest of seven siblings. She graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1948 and remained active with the alumni association throughout her life. In East Liverpool, Shirley worked for the Harker Pottery Company.
Shirley met the love of her life, Jim Cox of Steubenville, OH, at a church dance. They married on September 6, 1953, in East Liverpool. They spent the early years of their marriage in Athens, OH, where Jim attended Ohio University, and in Newark, OH, before relocating to Indianapolis.
Shirley and Jim spent most of their lives in the Irvington area of Indianapolis. Shirley was a member of Irvington Presbyterian Church where she was part of PEO and PWC, among other involvements. Shirley and Jim were also longtime members of Irvington’s Parhesian Club.
Shirley spent her career working at the national headquarters for the Disciples of Christ in Indianapolis, where she served as the yearbook editor for many years. She retired from the Disciples of Christ in 1995 after 36 years.
Shirley was passionate about her hobbies. She enjoyed writing poetry, reading, quilting, crocheting, and sewing. Her beautiful handicrafts are treasured by her family and friends. Shirley was a social butterfly at heart, and she and Jim loved to entertain and spend time with family and friends. She was always current on the latest family news from around the country, and took great joy in the accomplishments of her nephews and nieces. A sweet, loving, tender soul, "Aunt Shirley" will be missed by her beloved nephews and nieces.
