Thomas Dewane Duty, born December 23, 1918, in Friendly, West Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 22, 2009.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Sylvia Duty; his son, Thomas Dewane; his sisters, Katherine Dearth, Cleila Mitchell, Jessie Platt Walker, Mabel Wadsworth; and brothers, Claude, Vernon, and Harold.

Mr. Duty is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Margaret Davidson Duty. Also surviving him are nieces, Beth Goracke, Janice Stone, Terri Jewels, Donna Platter, Beth Chapman, Joanee Kazmier, and Pamela Boaz; and nephews, Donald Duty, David and Orval Mitchell, and Roger and Gary Platt; as well as devoted family friend, Marnee Finch.

Mr. Duty enlisted in the United States Navy in August of 1939. He attended boot camp at Naval Training Station in Newport, RI, during which time he was berthed for a brief period aboard USS Constellation; he advanced to Aviation Machinist's Mate Third Class in 1941. He was assigned to USS New York (BB-34) from 1940-1946. In 1944 he advanced to Chief Aviation Machinist's Mate. While assigned to USS NEW YORK, the ship provided support to convoys operating in the North Atlantic; participated in Operation Torch, the November 1942 invasion of North Africa; provided pre-invasion support for the invasion of Iwo Jima; and provided 76 continuous days of gun fire support for the invasion of Okinawa. In 1945 he was awarded the Air Medal. The citation read: "His devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service." In addition, he was awarded the Bronze Star. Following the completion of active duty, he was a Civil Servant at the Naval Air Rework Facility from 1960 to 1980.

He was baptized and joined Warrington Baptist Church in 1964. In the years that followed, he was a faithful member, serving as deacon for 28 years and being honored as Deacon Emeritus in December of 2008.
The family will receive friends at Oak Lawn Funeral Home on Friday, November 27 beginning at 10:00 a.m. and continuing until the memorial service at 12:00 p.m. Interment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery at 1:15 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers are Jake Knight, C.D. Nunnelley, Scott Jerauld, Glenn Duncan, Chuck Harmon, and Wes Delware. Honorary pallbearers are the fellow deacons of Warrington Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Florida Baptist Children's Home at 1000 Chemstrand Road; Cantonment, FL 32533.
