August 20, 1921 - February 17, 2008
Franklin A. Schlanz, 86, of Graysville, Pa. died at 7:05 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2008 in the Golden Living Center, Waynesburg, Pa. after being in failing health for the past four years. He was born August 20, 1921 in Wheeling, W.Va. a son of Frank Albert and Freda Ann Hellberg Schlanz and was raised in Neffs, Oh. Mr. Schlanz had briefly resided in Chicago after his military discharge prior returning to the Ohio Valley in the 1950’s and had resided in Shadyside, Oh. for approximately 30 years prior to moving to Graysville in 1983. He attended the Unity Presbyterian Church in Graysville and was a 1940 graduate of Bellaire (Ohio) High School and a graduate of the National Youth Association Camp in Carrolton, Ohio. Mr. Schlanz was a World War II vetern of the U.S. Army where he served a s Private with Medical Detachment Station, Camp Davis, North Carolina. He was a life member and past adjutant of the American Legion Post #77 in Neffs, Oh., and a past member of the Disabled American Veterans Post of Bellaire, Ohio and the AMVETS Assoc. and was a member of the loyal Order of the Moose in Moundsville, W.Va. Mr. Schlanz was an avid stamp collector and enjoyed photography and was a member of West Greene Senior Citizens, and attended Harvey’s Grange #1444 and enjoyed volunteering with the activities of the Graysville V.F.D. He was a former part time employee of the CHicago Post Office and was last employed as a machine operator with Wheeling Steel for 33 years prior to retiring in 1983. In November 1983, he married Shirley Nadine Staggers Schlanz who survives. Surviving in additon to his wife are a brother, Robert, husband of Marilyn Schlanz of Shadyside, Oh; three nephews, Robert, husband of Karen Schlanz of Cincinnati, Oh., John, husband of Barbara Schlanz of Arden, NC. and Michael, husband of Lisa Schlanz of Shadyside, Oh; six great nephews and nieces.
Friends will be received from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. the time of services and committal on Thursday, February 21, 2008, with Rev. Walt Stevenson officiating. Privated interment THursday, February 21, 2008 following services. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Graysville V.F.D., c/o 311 Dividing Ridge Rd., Graysville, Pa. 15337.”
