From Audra Rickey Wayne on FamilySearch.org:

Amos Hanlin married Levina Mosser and lived his entire life on Brush Run. He was a carpenter and built oil rigs after oil was discovered in Tyler County.

When his father, John Jr. died, Amos bought his brothers and sisters shares to the home place. He moved into the log house his father built. In March of 1884, when his wife Levina died, times were hard. He couldn't pay for the land and it was purchased by Harm Smith. Amos moved with his family to his brother, Tarlton's farm.

After Levina's death, Amos married her sister-in-law, Amanda Jane Darnell. They had one child named Plenny.

Tarlton, Amos' brother, had lost a leg in the Civil war and received a large pension. Another brother, Jeremiah, had also fought in the Civil War. He died in a hospital in Winchester, Virginia.

When oil was discovered in Tyler County, the people who owned land, such as Harm Smith and Tarlton Hanlin, became wealthy. Smith wanted a new home, so Amos Hanlin tore down the log house and built a new one for him. Amos later bought the land from him and moved back on to his father's property.

Amos' sister, Melissa Gatrell lived near him and helped with the rearing of most of her nieces and nephews. She was remembered fondly by them as very energetic woman. It was said that she could shear a sheep as well as any man.

Amos died at his home and was buried at the Brush Run Church of Christ Cemetery.

All of his children lived and died in Ritchie and Tyler counties except Mary Catherine. She spent some time in Evanston, Illinois, with her daughter. She died in Evanston, but was buried at the Brush Run Cemetery with other members of the family.
