Melissa was living in Brownsville in 1897 when she was identified as a daughter in her father’s obituary.136 She was living with her mother in 1900, then with sister Mary in 1910.

Her death certificate says she was born in Ohio, and had epilepsy from birth, which probably accounts for her guardianship after her mother (named as Hannah Jacobs) died in 1907.
