Harper “graduated from Tyler County High School in 1925. He attended Marshall University and graduated in 1933 from West Virginia University with an A. B. degree and, in 1937, from the W.V.U. College of Law with an LL.B., J. D. degree. He practiced law in Charleston until 1943, when he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the U. S. Naval Reserve. He returned to Charleston and resumed his law practice until his retirement in 1979.”

“Harper Granville [Grimm]
Harper Granville Grimm Sr., 96, passed away Monday, March 1, 2004, at his residence in Morgantown.
He was born Aug. 17, 1907, at Rippentuck, Tyler County, son of the late Bertrand McClellan Grimm and Ethel Gorrell Grimm.
Harper graduated from Tyler County High School in 1925 and attended Marshall College, where he was tudent body president in 1931-32. He completed his B.A. at WVU, where he also earned a Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 1937.
While attending Marshall COllege, he helped to establish its first student union and was the president of his fraternity, now Alpha Sigma Phi, for several years, obtaining its national affiliation.
He practiced law briefly in Corpus Christi, Texas, then returned to West Virginia where he married Nellie Simmons of Point Pleasant on Feb. 3, 1939, and practiced law in Charleston with Chapman Revercomb.
At the outbreak of World War II, Harper started a program in CHarleston to assist persons going into the armed forces with legal issues. He then joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, eventually rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
After the war, the family soon moved back to Charleston, where he engaged in commercial law for the remainder of his career of over 50 years.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner in the Charleston Masonic Lodge, played trumpet in the Charleston Shrine band for over 15 years, and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Charleston.
Mr. Grimm is survived by his children, Harper Granville Grimm Jr. and his wife, Jeanne, of Morgantown, Elizabeth Ann Grimm Roth and husband, Jack, of Houston, Texas, and Susannah Grimm Poe and husband, Steven, of Monumental. He also leaves five grandchildren, Geoffrey Granville Grimm, of Weston, Sarah Malinda Grimm Harris and spouse, John, of San Diego, Calif., Matthew Clayton Poe, of London, England, and Johanna and Katherine Roth, of Houton, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Anthony Grimm of Weston; and his beloved dog, Freckles.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 64 years, Nellie, who passed away in July of 2003; and his sisters, Shirley Grimm and Leota White.
Friends may call at McCulla Funeral Home in Morgantown from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2004. A graveside service will be held at the Friendly, W.Va., Cemetery on Thursday, March 4, 2004, at 1 p.m., with Carl Dayhoff officiating and Masonic Services following.”
