“Thomas Jack Roser
Thomas Jack Roser, 73, of New Brighton, a respected journalist, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, in St. Francis Medical Center, Pittsburgh, following complications of a stroke.
Born April 27, 1928, in New Brighton, a son of the late Thomas Sheridan and M. Florence (Yeager) Roser of Marion Hill, he attended New Brighton High School and played end position for the football team. Roser joined the Navy following high school, serving from February 1946 to December 1947. While in the Navy, he found his calling in journalism when he was put to work on the Navy newspaper. When his tour of duty was completed, he attended Tulane University and then moved on to the University of Missouri, graduating in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. While at Missouri, he also played intramural football. He began his career as editor of a small chain of weekly newspapers in Buckner, Mo., moving in 1952 to work on the Salem News in Salem, Ohio. In 1957, he was hired by the Pittsburgh Press where he worked as a copy editor. In 1961, he moved his family to Darmstadt, Germany, where he worked as News Editor for the military newspaper, Stars and Stripes. This position afforded him the opportunity to travel widely throughout Europe with his family. With the exception fo two years tha he spent working for the San Diego Union, 1966 through 1968, he worked for Stars and Stripes the ramainder of his career. He worked twice in Germany, where he retired in 1993, and once in Tokyo, Japan, where the Asian edition of the paper was published. His career with the Stars and Stripes spanned over 30 years. Following his retirement in 1993, Roser moved to Boston and three years later returned to New Brighton where he resided with Virginia Roser until his death. An avid traveler with a boundless sense of curiosity, Roser was kown for his with, his gentleness, his kindness, and his love for animals. After he retired, Roser continued to read a coupel newspapers every day, as well as watched multiple television newscasts. While living in Boston, he worked at the Boston Library and Aquarium.
Tragedy struck his life twice. In 1980 [sic], a daughter froom his first marriage, Darla Kay Roser, died of cancer at age 13. ANd in 1980, a daughter from his second marriage, Keiko Kris Roser, at the age of 6 was killed by an automobile. These events cast a darkness over an otherwise rich and adventure-filled life.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Dr. Connie Roser-Renouf and Andrew Renouf, Acata, Calif.; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard I. and JoAnne Roser, Robbinsville, N.J.; two grandchildren, Kaia and Gabriel Renouf, Acata; his first wife, Virginia L. Roser, Daugherty Township; his second wife, Sachiko T. Roser, Boston, Mass.; a brother and sister-in-law, James W. and Frances Roser, North Sewickley Township, and two nieces and one nephew and their familes.
Friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. and mOnday from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 11 a.m. in the J&J Spratt Funeral Home, 1612 Third Ave., New Brighton, with the Rev. James J. Krouse of the Marion Hill Christian & Missionary Alliance CHurch officiating.
Interment will follow in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park, Rochester.
The family requests memorials be made, if desired, in his name to the Beaver COunty Humane Society, Route 18, Monaca, Pa. 15601.
The members of the Beaver COunty Special Unit will meet at 11:45 a.m. at the cemetery to provide military honors.”
