Wilma Kathleen (Higgins) Davis, "Kat" to family and friends, went home Feb. 24, 2006, at the age of 81 after many years of service to her Lord, her family and her church.
She was the devoted wife of the late Paul D. Davis and loving daughter of James J. and Artie Lee "Jetty" (Locke) Higgins who preceded her in death. She remained faithful to her Lord and Savior through the loss of three brothers, James Ralph, Harold Woodrow in service to his country, Orran Blare; two sisters, Opal Irene Cumblidge-Mercer, Rosie Butler Davis; and others near and dear from an extensive, loving family — brothers, sisters and sons by marriage, nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts and uncles. She cherished each one and never forgot them.
Her heritage of faith and service began Nov. 29, 1924, in Shawnee, Pleasants County. She enjoyed her school years attending Jackson Hall and Morris School's through the eighth grade.
At 17 she met and married her husband of 57 years. During that time she nurtured and trained their five children; worked on the farm harvesting hay, wheat and corn in season; cutting and logging mine bars to the road by horse; gardening, canning, butchering, and preserving God's bounty for the welfare of her family and the needy poor.
As the children grew she felt free to work at public service: The Court Restaurant, the Elf Restaurant, St. Marys Cab Stand, the Hi-Way Grille, Morris Restaurant, and finally the Colin Anderson Center. After many years of public employment she retired to be a full-time homemaker and caregiver to her husband and family.
While a young woman, she attended Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church beginning a lifelong journey of service to her Lord. The journey would take her to Zoar Baptist, Pilgrim Holiness, and finally to St. Marys Church of the Nazarene. There she took membership and actively pursued various ministries within the church. The Lord opened a door of service as a member of the Board of Trustees, then as a Steward, Missionary treasurer, Sunday school treasurer, church treasurer and for a short while church secretary. At the same time she served on the Vacation Bible School Committee every year for 25 years. She was the recipient of many service awards culminating with the Distinguished Service Award. Through it all her constant cry was "I just have to praise my Lord, He's my all in all."
This remarkable woman served man and God in many other capacities too numerous to mention, but the legacy of her loving service and faithfulness will long be remembered by those whose lives she touched.
The Bible says children are the heritage of the Lord and "Kat" worked all her life to ensure God would receive his heritage from her.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Leota C. "Cookie" (Davis) Locke, son George Wayne Locke II and his wife, Sheryl Ann (Stewart) Locke, and children Austin Mitchell and Chloe Louise; Delmas Murl Davis and wife, Karen Rae (Felton) Davis; son Anthony Duane Davis and wife, Becky (Winland) Davis, and children, Nikki Marie and Tyler Lee Davis; son Eric Scott Davis and his wife, Deborah (Boley) Davis, children Erika Danielle and Jonathan Davis; daughter, Sharie Kay (Davis) Noland, and her husband, Rick Noland, children Ricky, Bradley, and Kacey Noland; James C.
