“Jack lived in a fancy double-decker houseboat by the 7th Street Bridge (on Allegheny River) in Pittsburgh. He was building the Donald T. Wright and had ordered an engine. When the guy showed up with the engine, he wouldn’t take a check; he wanted to be paid in cash. Jack said, ‘OK, but I’ve got the crane right here. Let’s unload it first, then we’ll go right to the bank.’
When they went to the bank, there was no money in Jack’s account. He asked the bank what had happened and was told that his wife had taken it all. When he went back to the houseboat landing, his wife, kids, and houseboat were gone.
Later, Jack remarried. Both he and his second wife were drunks. They used to stop every day on the river for a fifth of whiskey and a case of beer. After getting out of the boats, they bought a row of apartment houses off Federal Street in Pittsburgh and the Three Deuces Bar. They drank away all of the income from the apartments and bar, and lost them both. Both of them were buried in pauper’s graves along the Allegheny.”4

Jack died in Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh on October 20,1959 at the age of 56. The cause of death was Bilateral Pneumonia due to Cirrhosis of the Liver. He was divorced at the time, although his spouse was given as Marion Grimm (Kelly). According to the death certificate he was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Sharpsburg, Allegheny Co., PA.2 The burial information is at odds with what Jim Grimm told me, but checks out on Findagrave.com. He is buried in Section 3, Range 8, Row 4, Grave 3, alghough there is no gravestone.
