Obituary:
“Blood Clot Fatal To Community’s Oldest And Best Known Dairyman
News of the sudden death of Walter Doughty, which occurred unexpectedly of a brain hemorrhage at the Bonne Terre hospital on last Saturday morning was received with widespread and genuine sorrow by his many friends in the Farmington community. He had undergone an operation for hernia at the hospital about ten days ago and his condition appeared to be entirely satisfactory. Both he, his physician and his family confidently expected that he would be coming home in an few days safely on the road to an early and complete recovery. But these fond hopes were not to be fulfilled.
Walter Doughty was an industrious and honorable citizen of the community. For nearly 50 years he had been profitably engaged in the dairy business. He was ruggedly honest in all his dealings with his fellowman. Also he had strong convictions and was ever ready to defend them, yet he was charitably inclined toward those who did not agree with him. he was loyal in his support of the church and every enterprise and institution helpful to the community. Walter Doughty will be missed in this community.
Walter Wood Doughty, younger son of the late Milton Cayce and Sarah Jane Doughty, was born June 18, 1888, at the old family home near Farmington. He lived his entire life there, as did several generations before him. his great grandfather, Capt. James Doughty, of the Revolutionary army, had settled on the farm over a hundred years ago.
Mr. Doughty had recently undergone an operation at the Bonne Terre Hospital and after more than a week had passed he was feeling much better and everyone thought he would soon be home, then quite suddenly he passed away on Saturday, April 23, 1949. he was 60 years, 10 months and 23 days of age.
On February 11, 1911, he was married to Minnie Burch. To this union were born six children, all of whom surive and are Nelle (Mrs. Eddie) Ridenour and Glenda (Mrs. Ervan) Miller, of Anchorage, Alaska; Alfred, a student in Missouri University, Columbia; Glenwood of Farmington, and Melbourn and Donald, at home. He also leaves besides his wife and children, one brother, Job M. Doughty, of Strafford, Mo.; one sister, Julia (Mrs. C. H.) Menge, of Farmington, and two grandchildren, Kenneth Ervan and Carol Jane Miller, of Anchorage, Alaska; also seven nephews and nieces. Two sisters, Isabella and Stella, preceded him in death.
He united with tehe Carleton Memorial Methodist Church in his youth. He lived among his relatives and neighbors a straightforward, helpful, industrious life. He had a wide circle of friends who will miss his leadership in the community.
Funeral services were held at the Carleton Memorial Methodist Church at two o’clock on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Theo. Probst, assisted by Rev. Elbert Menge, pastor of the Baptist Church at Troy, Mo., and a nephew of Mr. Doughty. Interment was in the K. of P. Cemtery with Miller Service in charge.”1298
