Russell E. Grimm
September 8, 1928 to November 22, 2019
Russell was born to Marie and Allie Grimm in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where he grew up with four siblings. In the 4th grade he took up the trumpet, paving the way for a life intertwined with music. Russell graduated from Parkersburg High in 1946, joining the U.S. Marine Corps soon after.
The Marines sent him to the Ernest Williams School of Music in New York and he was accepted into the Marine Corps Band. He fought two tours in Korea and traveled North America and Mexico playing trombone, sousaphone and trumpet in concerts and parades. He also played stand-up bass professionally on the side.
In 1966 Russell retired from the Marines as a gunnery sergeant in San Diego and worked with various music companies and stores. In 1971, the future love of-his-life walked into a store he managed, to buy a guitar string. They were married in 1973.
By 1979, yearning for a quieter life, they moved to Ashland, Oregon, opening their own music store, Mountain Music Inc., in Medford while building a home and farm on 5 acres. Russell served as President of the Lions Club International, President of the Pear Blossom Festival, and Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge #23.
Russell is survived by his loving wife, Anita; son Chad (Jane); three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son, Curt; his parents; and four siblings, Allie Franklin Grimm Jr., Mary Lee McNerney, Margaret Starling and James Dwight Grimm.
A man loved by many, his generous spirit, loving heart, and charismatic personality will be greatly missed. Please join us for services to celebrate his life on December 8th, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Ashland Masonic Lodge, 570 Clover Lane, in Ashland.
