Community leader, educator Clarence Cooper dead at 83
Clarence R. Cooper, 83, 125 S. Granville Blvd., died Friday morning in Fremont Memorial Hospital. He had been a patient at Bethesda Care Center for the past two weeks.
He was born Aug. 11, 1902 in Waterford, Ohio, to Jesse C. and Maggie C. (Laugh) [sic—should be Lough] Cooper. He married Margaret D. Cunningham June 26, 1926 in McConnelsville, Ohio. She died July 30, 1979.
Surviving are a daughter, Raymona Anderson, Sandusky; brother, Martin R., Albuquerque, N.M.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded by his parents and five brothers.
He was a 1920 graduate of McConnelsville High School; a 1921 graduate of Morgan County Normal School; a 1925 graduate of Ohio University; and received his master’s degree from Ohio State University in 1928.
He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was a past Sunday School superintendent; a member of the Masonic Lodge, Chapter, Council, and Commandery; Scottish Rite; the York Rite; Zenobia Shrine; past president of Crusaders; past president of Fremont Shrine Club; and past patron of Eastern Stars.
He was director of the Sandusky County Chapter of the Red Cross and a charter member and director of the Sandusky County YMCA. He was past president and past lieutenant governor of Kiwanis Club, where he had 45 years of perfect attendance. He was a member of the Boy Scouts, where he received the Silver Beaver Award and the Torch Award.
Cooper was named Sandusky County Citizen of the year in 1977 by the Sandusky County Chamber of Commerce and was named recipient of the Exchange Club’s Book of Golden Deeds Award in 1980.
He taught at Ohio University and came to Fremont Ross High School in 1927, where he taught until 1939. He became assistant principal in 1939; principal in 1946 and retired in 1966. He was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa Education fraternity; and first president of the Fremont Chapter of Ohio Retired Teachers.
Friends may call Sunday between 2-4 and 7-9 at the Keller-Ochs-Koch Funeral Home, 416 S. Arch St., where Masonic services will be held at 6:30 p.m.
Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
The family suggests the [sic] any memorials be made to the Sandusky County YMCA, The Sandusky County Chapter of the American Red Cross, or Memorial United Methodist Church.
