Obituary, Democrat Messenger (Waynesburgh, PA), Nov. 17, 1922:
William J. Chess, aged 62 years, a lifelong resident of Greene county, died Friday night, November 10, at the home of his son Harry Chess, in Washington, Pa. His death was due to stomach trouble and followed an illness of more than a year.
Mr. Chess was s son of Henry and Susanna Courtwright Chess and was born at Bristoria on November 9, 1860. He had spent all his life in Jackson and Richhill townships, following farming until his last illness. He was a member of the Methodist Protestant church. His wife, who was formerly Miss Emma R. Smith, and the following children survive: Daniel Chess, of Altoona; Lawrence Chess, of Waynesburg; Mrs. Daisy Lightner, of Washington; Mrs. Louie Kerns and Mrs. Annie Kinney of Jackson township; Mrs. Mary Kerr, of Kosse, Texas; Mrs. Ada Poland, of Mt. Morris; Mrs. Margaret Hughes, of Bluff, and Harry Chess, of Washington. Funeral services were held in the Valley Chapel Methodist Protestant church, Jackson townshsip, Sunday afternoon, with Rev. Adam Rush, of Rogeersville, in charge. The interment was in the Valley Chapel cemetery.
