Mrs. Emma R. Smith Chess — Mrs. Emma R. Chess, aged nearly 59 years, widow of W. W. Chess [sic], died Thursday morning, February 12, at 3 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lafey Hughes, of Bluff, Jackson township. Her death was due to paralysis, with which she was stricken last Friday night.

Mrs. Chess was a daughter of William and Nancy Smith, deceased, and was born March 12, 1866, in the Claylick section of Center township. She had spent all her life in Center and Jackson townships and was well known there. Her husband’s death occurred two years ago. Mrs. Chess was a member of the Methodist Protestant church.

Nine children survive as follows: Daniel Chess, of Altoona; Lawrence Chess, of Waynesburg; Mrs. Daisy Lightner, of Washington; Mrs. Louie Kerns and Mrs. Anna Kinney, of Jackson township; Mrs. Mary Kerr, of Gorman, Texas; Mrs. Ada Poland of Mt. Morris; Mrs. Margaret Hughes, of Bluff and Harry Richard Chess, of Washington. She is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: I. T. Smith, of Davistown; J. B. Smith, of Waynesburg; Margaret Smith, of Rutan; Mrs. Mary Applegate of Richhill township, and Lindsay Smith, of Hundred, W. Va.

The funeral will be held Saturday. Short services will be held at the Hughes home, after which services will be held in the Valley Chapel church at 2 o’clock. The interment will be in the Valley Chapel cemetery.
