Edward S. Smith, 83, of 297 W. Franklin St., Waynesburg, died Saturday, July 7, 1979, at 7:35 a.m. in his residence after being seriously ill for the past five months.

Born October 19, 1895, at Nettle Hill, he was the son of the late Elihue and Annie Kughn Smith. He was first married in 1917 to Lillie Smith, who died in 1945. In 1951, he married Esther Huffman, who survives.

His early life was spent as a farmer in the Rutan area. Later he became skilled in woodworking, cabinetmaking and in precision repairs and restoration of antiques.

Smith was an avid golfer and and won many trophies. He was a longtime member of the Greene County Country Club and the Carmichaels Golf Club. Smith was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Waynesburg.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Esther Smith, are two sons, James H. Smith, R.D. 2, Prosperity, and James William Meighan, DuBois; nine daughters, Mrs. Theodore (Wilma) Crouse, R.D. 1, Holbrook, Mrs. Charles (Kathryn) Parson, Wind Ridge, Mrs. Robert (Violet) Rush, Salem, Ohio, Mrs. Paul (Ruth) Braddock, Wind Ridge, Mrs. Charles (Dorothy) Grimm, Indiana, Pa., Mrs. Charles (Virginia) Ekey, Pittsburgh, Mrs. Harold (Carolyn) Adrian, Waynesburg, Mrs. Frank (Marilyn) Burns, Evans City, Mrs. Charles (Lynn) Zimmerman, Harrison City; 30 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Deceased are a granddaughter and a brother, James B. Smith.
