Obituary, Waynesburg Republican, Feb. 1959:
“William P. Smith, 63 years, formerly of Jefferson and Waynesburg, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1959 in his home in Philadephia. He had been ill a short time with a heart ailment.
Mr. Smith had engaged in the mercantile business in Waynesburg, and for the past thirteen years had been in the insurance department of the Veteran’s Administration in Philadelphia.
He was a son of Thomas Milligan Smith and Elizabeth Pague Smith, and was born at Jefferson, Sept. 15, 1893. He attended Jefferson Public Schools.
Mr. Smith was a veteran of both World Wars, and retired from the Army Air force with the rank of Major. He was a member of the James Farrel Post 330, American Legion, Waynesburg, and in 1938 was commander of the post.
Mr. Smith was a member and trustee of the First Methodist Church of Germantown.
He was an active Mazonic member and belonged to Waynesburg Lodge 153, F&AM. He was worshipful master of the lodge in 1935. Mr. Smith was a 32nd degree Mason and held membership in the Syria Temple Shrine in Pittsburgh.
Surviving are his wife, Edyth Staggers Smith, two brothers; attorney R. Stanley Smith, of Waynesburg; and Thomas M. Smith of Jefferson; and one sister, Mrs. Mary S. Daugherty of Canonsburg. One infant son is deceased.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 in the Garrison Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Maurice E. Hoover, of the Advocate Methodist Church, of Germantown. Interment will be in Jefferson cemetery.”
