“Gertrude S. Dukate
Waynesburg seamstress
Gertrude S. Dukate, 89, of 161 South Porter Street, Waynesburg, died at 5:30 a.m. Friday, October 13, 2000.
She was born June 3, 1911, in Jackson Township, Greene County, a daughter of George W. and Zella Kerr Staggers.
Mrs. Dukate lived her entire life in Greene County.
Since 1941, she lived in Waynesburg, where she was a member of First Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She served as Sunday school teacher, deaconess and director of Bible School, and was a member of the quilters class of the church.
Mrs. Dukate was a charter member of Waynesburg Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary and a member of Women’s Christian Temperance Union.
She taught sewing at the Youth Development Center in Waynesburg and was known throughout Greene County as a seamstress.
On June 4, 1931, she married Raymond L. Dukate, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Dolores Headlee of Gainsesville, Va., and Sherry Crandall of Waynesburg; three sons, George of Waynesburg, Larry of Dayton, Ohio , and Loren H. “Red” Dukate of Clarksville; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Howard Staggers of Waynesburg.
A granddaughter, Suzanne Dukate, is deceased.”
