Duncan was in touble with the law on a couple of occasions, as noted in The Daily Courier, Connellsville, PA:
July 16, 1903: “Duncan Acklin of Brownsville was also released [from jail]. He was charged by his wife, Nora Acklin, with surety of the peace and non-support. He has since been in jail for the costs.”
Feb. 16, 1904: “Sold Kentucky Whiskey
Duncan Acklin of Grindstone had a hearing before Squire John N. Dawson, Saturday, on a charge of selling liquor without license. The prosecutor was Alex. McBeth and the defendant was held for March court. He had been acting as a special agent for a Kentucky firm, for whom he took orders on a commission. The whiskey was shipped direct to the purchased [purchaser?] and Acklin then collected and sent the firm the money.”

“Acklin, Duncan J. Aged 78 a lifelong resident of Brownsville and a retired painting contractor died Tuesday, September 6, 1955 at 9 a.m. in his residence, 412 Huron Ave. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, Brownsville. He was born in 1877 a son of the late Lawrence and Sara Beatty Acklin. He is survived by his wife, Nora Kelley Acklin; eight sons and daughters, Wilbur and Okal, Brownsville, Mrs. Arlis (Sylvia) Mitchell, Ohio; Miss Lillian, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Mabel Bookhardt, at home; Calvin, Pittsburgh; John and Griffith, Brownsville; twenty-three grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one brother, John, Carmichaels. Friends are being received in the Kisinger Funeral Home, Brownsville where services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ben F. Donley, his pastor officiating. Interment will be in Bridgeport Cemetery.”
