Jesse ended up raising a bunch of kids, not all his own. When his first wife, Mary, died in 1866, Jesse had four children: Alva, Barbara, Sarah, and Mary. In 1865 his younger sister, Clarissa Grimm Cooper, who had been widowed the previous year, died, leaving four children of her own (William, Barbara, Jesse, and Reese, Jr.) plus a step-daughter, Lavina Cooper. Those five children ended up moving in with Jesse and Mary, and then Mary died a year later, leaving Jesse with nine children between ages fifteen and two. In 1866 Jesse married Phoebe Hamilton McCullough, a widow with a two-year-old daughter, Mary McCullough. That brought the total children in the household to ten. Jesse and Phoebe then had six children of their own between 1867 and 1885, bringing the total of children raised by Jesse to sixteen. The oldest Cooper girl, Lavina, did get married in 1869 and presumably left the household, so she was not there when the four youngest children were born.

From Jesse’s obituary:
“Jesse Grim, died at Bearsville, Tyler Co., WV on 26 January 1924. He was 86 years old. He had lived all his life at the old home on Grim’s Run where his father had located more than a century ago. He was first married to a Miss Fordyce who died, leaving two children, Dr. A. S. Grim of St. Marys, WV and Mrs. Elizabeth Darnell of McKim.
Later Mr. Grim married Phoebe Hamilton McCullough who with the following children survive: Mrs. George P. Myers of Alma, WV; Mrs. C. M. Swan of Middlebourne, WV; Mrs. Celia McDougal at home; John of Grim’s Run and Alfred L. of Sugar Creek. Mr. Grim was a member of the United Brethren Church at Bearsville.”57

If Jesse’s obituary is correct, that would make the year of his birth 1837, not 1835.
